Mr and Mrs Willis were looking for a cost-effective way to maximise living space in order to accommodate their daughter and her family. They settled on a SIPs conversion in and above the garage using the Kingspan TEK Building System, which would enable them to make the most of the roof space whilst minimising labour costs.
Why SIPs?
Having become attached to their existing house and the beautiful scenery that they had enjoyed in Cross Hills, Skipton for the previous 30 years, the Willises were keen to stay as close to home as possible. However, with their daughter and her family looking to join them, space was going to be extremely tight unless they moved house or came up with a suitable alternative.
Following consultation with Gary Sorsby of Graphics Architectural Services in nearby Lothersdale, Keighley, they decided to use SIPs to make the garage habitable and create first floor living accommodation above it. This would provide ample living space for the Willises whilst enabling their daughter and her family to move into the house next door.
With planning limits on the height of the roof ridge, space was limited. A SIPs conversion would enable them to maximise available space in the roof as there would be no need for roof trusses or bulky insulation. Instead, the panels would be used to form a continuous shell of insulation throughout the roof and inner wall, transforming the structure into a warm and comfortable home.
This kind of building conversion and extension offers excellent value for money. We were on site for less than four days and the Willis's now have a virtually watertight shell to work on inside and out. They can’t quite believe how much space is available, which was not so easy to envisage from the plans!
