SIPS@Clays Provides SIPs for Gatehouse at UK’s Largest Freeport

Published 21st May 2021

A state-of-the-art gatehouse at the newly revamped entrance to the UK’s largest industrial zone has been constructed using structural insulated panels (SIPs), designed, fabricated and installed by (Skipton based) SIPS@Clays.

Built on the site of the former Redcar Steelworks entrance, the new SIPs gatehouse will welcome visitors and international investors to the Teesside Freeport, which covers 4,500 acres and is the largest freeport in the country.

Working with contractor Esh Construction and architects POD Newcastle to deliver the time critical project on behalf of Teesworks, SIPS@Clays was commissioned for its competence in delivering similar high-profile projects and the team’s ability to meet the strictest of deadlines.

Andy Porter, Partner, SIPS@Clays said: “Following on from the initial enquiry, it was clear that this significant project was exceptionally time critical.

“One of the many benefits of off-site manufacturing and more specifically SIPs, is the rapid fabrication and installation process, which combined with its green credentials, provided the ideal construction solution for the new gatehouse.

“Following the initial design consultations, it took the SIPS@Clays team one day to fabricate the Kingspan TEK building system at the company’s factory in Skipton, and a further 10 days for onsite installation.

“We are delighted to have been involved in this extremely high profile regeneration project and look forward to watching the UK’s largest industrial zone flourish - with its SIPs gatehouse as the focal point.”

“The team at Clays pulled out all the stops to deliver a quality product. They provided sound technical knowledge that assisted the project team to fully consider future dependant elements whilst still in concept stage and overall delivered an exceptional building for the client.”

Steve Conn, Divisional Director at Esh Construction

The revamped entrance includes the contemporary single storey SIPs gatehouse and training facility, parking area, bespoke street lighting and modern landscaping. A purpose built 30m x 3m LED screen has also been installed as a feature to showcase the capabilities of the industrial zone, as well as providing up to date site information.
