SIPS@Clays Build in Homebuilding & Renovating Magazine

Published 6th January 2016|||

Read about an eco self build project we worked on in this month’s issue

The February issue of Homebuilding & Renovating magazine features a remarkable eco building project we worked on back in 2013. The brainchild of second-time self builders George and Sue Davies, Riseley eco cottage has already appeared on the Homebuilding & Renovating blog, which highlighted the benefits of structural insulated panels (SIPs) and their suitability for this unique project.

The recent article explores the painstaking planning that went into the build, highlighting the couple’s intelligent selection of materials and renewables, which has enabled them to keep their energy bills down to just £1 per day.

The story behind George and Sue’s eco building project

The one acre plot of land upon which Riseley eco cottage is built holds a special significance for George and Sue. It is also home to a Victorian property renovated by the couple, as well as their previous self build project, a brick and mortar family home.

Undisputedly contemporary in design and concept, their recent eco building project represents the missing link in the chain. With the children grown up and moved out, the cottage’s light, open plan feel and modern home comforts make it the perfect place for the couple to settle down and enjoy the fruits of their self build legacy.

Overcoming adversity in the planning process

While George and Sue may have been spared the slog of finding a plot, inevitably there were several hurdles to overcome in the planning process. Not only did their intended plot happen to sit right on the settlement boundary for their village; it also lies within a Conservation Area.

How would George, Sue and their architect, Simon Atkins of ABIR Architects, come up with a solution that would meet the couple’s brief for a contemporary eco home whilst preserving the character and appearance of the Conservation Area?

Pick up the February issue of Homebuilding & Renovating magazine to read the story in full…
